KritterZ

Unique bird sculptures from recycled cutlery

Cutlery art by Corine Eising · Zuidhorn

Welcome to KritterZ

Hello, I am Corine

On this website I like to share my 'KritterZ' creations with you. They are all made from recycled cutlery that I collect from thrift stores and then grind, polish and solder. Most KritterZ represent animals, especially birds. Sometimes fantasy, often as realistic as possible. I really enjoy that people enjoy my KritterZ and they regularly fly out to other homes.

My workflow

From recycled material to unique artworks

Recycled materials

I use recycled materials as much as possible. Scouring thrift stores for cutlery, other metal materials and tools is part of the fun. Each find tells a story - from old silver-plated spoons that were once family heirlooms to forgotten tools that deserve a second life. It's fascinating to see how different materials can come together to create something new. Sometimes I find unexpected treasures that are perfect for a specific KritterZ I've had in mind for a while.

Inspiration

My inspiration for these KritterZ comes from nature and certainly has to do with my background as a biologist. As a child I was already fascinated by animals and during my studies I could study animal behavior and travel to distant places. However, creativity took a back seat until the switch had to be made. Now I try to capture the unique beauty of nature in my creations. It makes me sad that nature is under pressure worldwide and so many species are disappearing. I hope that people see the beauty of that diversity in my KritterZ and look differently at real species and their survival.

Grinding, sanding and soldering

With a vise, angle grinder, Dremel and sander you can go a long way for making cutlery KritterZ. Then the pieces are soldered together as naturally as possible with silver tin. Different looks are created by sanding or polishing. To be able to do this as well as possible, I have invested in professional equipment that helps me with this. Each piece gets the time it needs to come into its own; sometimes I have to adjust a piece several times until it feels just right. It's a process of patience and precision, where each KritterZ gets its own character.

My Woman Cave

Where creativity and passion come together

Creative space

In my studio in Zuidhorn, no more than a shed in the backyard, you'll find everything I need to make my KritterZ.

I have now collected a large stock of cutlery, both from thrift stores and received from people who know I collect cutlery. When soldering I work with different flux materials, depending on the type of alloy in the metal I use. That's not always visible on the outside, but becomes apparent in practice quickly.

In my shed I made a workbench together with my oldest son and installed a simple extraction system myself. With some nice music, the hours fly by without me noticing and I completely relax.
